C. Jackson Cowart is a sports writer and editor. His work has appeared in ESPN, Forbes, Front Office Sports and Advance Local publications, and he has worked as a senior publishing editor since 2023.
He edits Muddy River Sport’s coverage of high school and college athletics in Galesburg, Monmouth, Knox County and the surrounding communities of west-central Illinois.

Where he works from — and why that matters to you
We would rather say this plainly than have you find out sideways: he works remotely, from Washington state. He is not in the bleachers at Knoxville on a Friday night, and he is not going to pretend otherwise.
That is why this site is built the way it is. Muddy River Sport’s game coverage runs on people who are actually there — coaches, athletic directors, scorekeepers, parents and photographers across west-central Illinois who send in scores, results and pictures as games end.
The editing, the research, the schedules, the conference structures, the playoff math: that is his job. Knowing that ROWVA/Williamsfield went up two sets in the third: that is yours.
We are looking for local contributors
If you are at games in Galesburg, Monmouth, Knoxville, Abingdon, Oneida, Biggsville or anywhere in Knox and Warren counties, we want to hear from you. Specifically:
- Friday night score reporters. One text with a final score. That is the whole job.
- Photographers. Even phone photos. We credit every image we run.
- Writers. If you want to cover your school’s team, we will publish you and put your name on it.
- Coaches and ADs. Schedules, rosters, results — we would rather have them from you than from MaxPreps.
