Western Big 6 Conference: Eight Schools, Not Six

The Western Big 6 has eight schools. It has had eight since the 2019-20 school year, and it kept the name anyway. That single fact is the thing most people are actually trying to find out, and almost nothing online says it plainly.

This is a current reference for the conference Galesburg plays in: who is in it, how it got to eight, how competitive it is, and the several other things called “Big 6” that clutter the search results. Membership here comes from the IHSA’s own conference register, updated 28 August 2026.

Which schools are in the Western Big 6?

Eight. Enrollment figures are the IHSA’s official numbers from the 2025-26 classification cycle.

The conference president for 2026-27 is Jane Barrett of Alleman.

One name to get right

The IHSA lists the East Moline school as “East Moline (United)” — the word “Township” does not appear in its register. That matters locally, because United of Monmouth is a completely different school: a small-school programme in the Lincoln Trail Conference with a few hundred students, not a 1,869-pupil Quad Cities high school. When Galesburg lost 38-28 “at United” in Week 3 this season, it was at United Township in East Moline.

Why is it called the Big 6 if it has eight schools?

Because for fifty years it genuinely had six.

The conference was chartered in January 1969 by Moline, Rock Island, Alleman, United Township, Quincy and Galesburg. Those same six stayed together, with no additions and no departures, from 1969 through 2018-19 — a remarkable run by Illinois standards, where conferences churn constantly. The Quincy Herald-Whig marked the fiftieth anniversary of the charter in February 2019.

Months later it became eight. Geneseo and Sterling joined for 2019-20, in all sports, after the Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference dissolved at the end of 2018-19 and scattered its ten schools. Most went to the Interstate 8; Geneseo and Sterling came west.

The name did not change. We have not found any source explaining why, so we are not going to invent a reason — but the brand was fifty years old, and nobody appears to have seriously proposed renaming it.

No school has ever left. All six charter members are still in it.

The merger that did not happen

If you remember talk of Western Big 6 expansion before 2019, you are probably thinking of 2013, when the conference discussed a football-only merger with the Peoria-area Mid-State 6. It fell through. Mid-State 6 schools played Western Big 6 opponents as independents through 2013-14 and then joined the Illinois Big Twelve in 2014.

Alleman and the football problem

This is the live story in the conference, and it needs stating carefully because it is easy to get wrong.

Alleman is a full member of the Western Big 6 in 2026-27. It is also not fielding a varsity football team.

The Catholic school’s enrollment has fallen by more than a third in fourteen years, to 285 — against 1,938 at Moline. Its football programme has not completed a normal varsity season in most of the last five years: winless in conference play in 2022 with one forfeit; no varsity team at all in 2023; a junior varsity schedule only in 2024; back to varsity in 2025 before forfeiting the final three games when injuries left eleven healthy players. For 2026 the administration again announced junior varsity only, which left the other seven schools filling holes in nine-game schedules at short notice.

There has been public argument — including a column in the Quincy press in June 2026 — that Alleman should leave the conference. That is opinion, not a decision, and the reporting around it noted that the league cannot vote out a charter member. As of October 2026 no school has announced a move in either direction, and Alleman is competing normally in volleyball, basketball and its other sports.

How competitive is the Western Big 6?

The honest answer is that it is two conferences in one. The enrollment spread runs from 285 to 1,938 — a factor of nearly seven, and about the widest you will find in an Illinois conference.

Four large schools above 1,700: Moline, United Township, Quincy, Rock Island.
Galesburg on its own at 1,120.
Two mid-size schools: Sterling 890, Geneseo 794.
Alleman at 285, subject to the IHSA’s 1.65 private-school multiplier.

In the state series that spread shows up directly. Moline has been Class 7A in football every year it has qualified since 2018-19; Geneseo plays 4A. Alleman competes in 1A and 2A across the board — two or three classes below its own conference rivals.

Recent state honours

Verified against IHSA records, most recent first:

Rock Island — boys soccer, Class 2A fourth place, 2025-26. The conference’s most recent state trophy.
Alleman — boys tennis 1A third, 2024-25; girls soccer 1A runners-up, 2022-23.
Moline — Class 4A boys basketball state champions, 2022-23, beating Benet Academy 59-42. The school’s first 4A boys basketball title.
Geneseo — girls track 2A runners-up in 2020-21 and 2022-23, third in 2021-22; boys wrestling 2A fourth, 2022-23; football state qualifiers in 4A four years running.
Sterling — Class 3A girls volleyball state champions, 2019-20, in their first season as a Western Big 6 member.
Moline — Class 4A softball state champions, 2010-11.
Rock Island — Class 3A boys basketball state champions, 2010-11.

Geneseo also holds four football state championships — 1976-77, 1977-78, 1978-79 and 1982-83 — all won long before it joined this conference. Quincy’s boys basketball titles date from 1933-34 and 1980-81.

Where Galesburg sits

Since this is our home school, plainly: Galesburg has not won a state trophy since 2014-15, when the boys track team finished second in 2A and the boys golf team third. The recent ceiling has been regional and sectional honours — four straight boys swimming sectional titles from 2022-23 through 2025-26, Class 3A girls basketball regionals in 2024-25 and 2025-26, and a 2A boys soccer regional in 2024-25.

One correction while we are here. Wikipedia credits Galesburg with a girls bowling state championship in 2020-21. The IHSA’s own season summaries show Galesburg with no state placement in girls bowling in any year, and no 2020-21 entry at all. We are not repeating it.

Where the conference actually is

The core is the Quad Cities — Moline, Rock Island, Alleman and United Township are all in Rock Island County, directly across the Mississippi from Davenport and Bettendorf, Iowa. Geneseo is about twenty miles east, Sterling about forty-five miles north-east on the Rock River, Galesburg about forty-five miles south-east.

Then there is Quincy, roughly 165 miles south of the Quad Cities, on the Mississippi opposite Missouri rather than Iowa. That travel distance is a real and much-discussed feature of belonging to this league, not a footnote. Five counties in all: Rock Island, Henry, Whiteside, Knox and Adams.

Also written “Western Big Six”

Both spellings are correct and refer to the same conference. The IHSA itself used “Western Big Six” on its older football pages and “Western Big 6” on current ones; the Quincy press uses “Six”; MaxPreps maintains league pages under both. If you are searching and finding nothing, try the other spelling.

Not to be confused with

The Big Six Conference — the college league, the unofficial name from 1928 to 1947 of the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association: Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa State, Kansas State and Oklahoma. It became the Big Seven, then the Big Eight, and dissolved into the Big 12 in 1996. This is the most common collision in search results and has nothing to do with Illinois high school sport.
The Northern Illinois Big 12 Conference — defunct after 2018-19, and the league Geneseo and Sterling came from. Central to this conference’s recent history, and a different thing entirely.
The Big Twelve Conference (IHSA) — a current Illinois league of Bloomington, Champaign, Danville, Normal, Peoria and Urbana schools. Unrelated.
The Mid-State 6 — the Peoria-area league that nearly merged with the Western Big 6 for football in 2013, and folded into the Big Twelve in 2014.
The Big Northern Conference — a separate IHSA league around Byron, Dixon and Rockford.

What we could not confirm

The conference’s own website. The IHSA register lists westernbig6.org, and a standings site exists at conferences.snap.app/westernbig6. Both block automated access, so we could not read either to verify what they publish.
An official sponsored-sports list. The conference crowns champions in football, boys and girls basketball, volleyball, boys and girls soccer, baseball, girls golf and boys tennis on the evidence of 2026 coverage, and member schools compete far more widely than that — but we have not found a conference-published list.
Why the name stayed “Big 6”. No source explains it.
Several schools’ full trophy histories. The IHSA’s records pages for Sterling and Moline truncate partway through on every attempt, so neither school’s list above should be read as complete. Wikipedia credits Moline with six softball state titles; we were able to verify only the 2010-11 one directly, so we have listed only that.

Neighbouring leagues: the Lincoln Trail Conference and the Prairieland Conference, the small-school leagues south and east of the Quad Cities.
