Editorial Standards and Corrections
Muddy River Sport covers high school and college athletics in Galesburg, Monmouth, Knox County and the surrounding communities. These are the standards we hold ourselves to, published so you can hold us to them too.
Corrections
We correct errors the same day we learn about them. No exceptions, no waiting for a convenient moment.
If we get a score wrong, misspell an athlete’s name, list the wrong kickoff time or misstate a record, email [email protected] and we will fix it. Substantive corrections are noted on the article itself rather than made silently.
We would rather be corrected than be wrong. Coaches, parents and athletes know things we do not, and we would always rather hear it.
Where our information comes from
We are direct about sourcing because in a small market it matters.
- Schedules, records and classification data come from the IHSA, MaxPreps and school athletic departments.
- Coach and player quotes reported by other outlets are attributed to those outlets by name — usually WGIL 93.7 or WMOI/WRAM, who do excellent interview work in this market. We do not present another outlet’s reporting as our own.
- College results and schedules come from the schools’ athletics departments and the Midwest Conference.
Where sources disagree — and they do, often, on small-school records and kickoff times — we say so rather than picking one silently.
What we will not do
- We will not invent quotes or statistics. If we cannot confirm a number, we leave it out or say we could not confirm it.
- We will not run gambling advertising. Our readers are largely the parents and families of high school athletes. Sports betting content has no place next to coverage of teenagers.
- We will not publish rumors about student-athletes — discipline, eligibility disputes, transfers, or anything from a student’s personal life. These are kids.
- We will not put a paywall on scores. A parent should never have to pay to find out whether their kid’s team won.
Covering minors
Most of the athletes we write about are between 14 and 18 years old. We cover what they do in competition. We do not cover them as public figures.
If you are a parent or guardian who wants your child’s name or photo removed from this site, email us and we will do it. You do not need to give a reason.
Independence
Muddy River Sport is independent and locally focused. We are not affiliated with the IHSA, any school district, or any other outlet.
To be clear about a common point of confusion: we are not affiliated with Muddy River Sports of Quincy, a separate publication covering the Quincy and northeast Missouri area. Similar name, different outlet, different territory.
