2026: 0-3 · Coach: Andrew Goodwin, third season · Division: Lincoln Land South · Enrollment: 294
United won a state football championship in the first year the school existed. It has two state titles, five state-finals trophies, and a girls track relay programme that has medalled at state in consecutive years — and almost nobody outside Warren County knows any of it.
2026 results
- Aug 21 — lost at Bureau Valley 36-27. A game suspended by lightning at 8:24 p.m., restarted at 10:56 after IHSA approval, and finished at 11:55.
- Aug 28 — lost to Illini West 38-24. United led 18-8 early in the third before the Chargers scored 30 unanswered. Kellen Boone ran for 146 yards and threw for 182 with three touchdowns.
Boone now has 697 passing yards through two games. United has allowed 74 points.
Sept 4 — lost to Stark County 54-51 at home. A hundred and five points, and fifty-one of them United\u2019s. That is not the performance of a winless team, and it is the result most worth a second look this season.

A state title in year one
United High School was formed in 2004, from the merger of Alexis High School and Monmouth Warren High School.
In its first season of existence, the Red Storm went 12-2 and won the IHSA Class 1A football state championship, beating Stockton 21-14.
There are not many schools anywhere that won a state title before they had graduated a class.
The softball years
Between 2008 and 2011, United reached the state finals four seasons in a row.
| Season | Record | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 2007-08 | 27-3 | Class 1A runner-up — lost to Cobden 5-2 in 11 innings |
| 2008-09 | 30-5 | Class 1A runner-up — lost to Cobden 1-0 in 19 innings |
| 2009-10 | 31-6 | Third place, Class 1A |
| 2010-11 | 29-4 | CLASS 1A STATE CHAMPIONS — beat Danville Schlarman 6-0 |
That 2009 final is one of the longest title games in IHSA softball history. Nineteen innings, decided 1-0, and United’s Katie Bertelsen set a Class 1A state-tournament record with five hits in a game. In the 2011 championship, Katie Kaywood hit a title-game record triple.
What United is actually made of
The consolidation history here is the most tangled of any school in the area.
- 2004 — Alexis High School and Monmouth Warren High School merge to form United
- 2007 — Monmouth Yorkwood High School deactivates and is annexed into United
And Yorkwood was itself a 1960 merger, of the Little York and Kirkwood districts. Its building opened in 1969 on Illinois Route 94, midway between the two towns, at a cost of $970,000. The Golden Bears, in purple and gold, went 241-184-6 across 47 seasons of football.
Yorkwood won the Class 1A football state championship in 1983, going 13-0 and beating Maroa-Forsyth 12-6 in overtime under Steve Graves — the same autumn Monmouth High School won Class 3A. And Alexis was the 1974 Class 2A state runner-up at 11-2.
The district today serves Alexis, Kirkwood, Little York, North Henderson, the unincorporated communities of Cameron and Gerlaw, and part of the edge of Monmouth. The school sits two miles east of Monmouth — which is why IHSA record books list it as “Alexis (United)” up to 2009 and “Monmouth (United)” from 2011.
The relay teams
The best thing United has done recently happened on a track.
At the 2025 IHSA state finals, the same four athletes ran three relays and medalled in all of them: 4×200 second, 4×400 third, 4×100 fifth, with the team placing 16th overall. Seniors Rosie Flynn, Katie Flynn and Emrick Huston, with sophomore Callie Hall.
The 4×400 broke the school record by five seconds, finishing just over four minutes. All three relays had also medalled in 2024.
In 2026 three relays reached the state prelims without advancing.
Volleyball, the quiet dynasty
United’s girls volleyball programme is 568-188 all-time — a .751 winning percentage, the best of any programme at any school in this coverage area.
The lineage runs Donn Damos (193 wins) to Carrie Clayton, who won 288 games between 2011 and 2021 with four regional titles, at least twenty wins in all eleven seasons and four thirty-win years, to Courtney Young from 2022. The deepest run was 2007: 31-4, beaten in a three-set super-sectional.
Young herself played Division II volleyball at Quincy University after graduating from United in 2007.
The 2026 team is 2-2, including a win over ROWVA/Williamsfield on August 27.
Recent form elsewhere
Baseball went 30-6 in 2026 with a Class 1A regional title, following regionals in 2021 and 2022. Girls golf were undefeated regional champions and state qualifiers in both 2025 and 2026. Boys basketball took a regional in 2022 at 27-7.
And the golf trophy
United has now won the Maple City Cup two years running, most recently 175-255 over Monmouth-Roseville at Gibson Woods on August 17, with Lucas Horner medallist at 38. The two schools are three miles apart. Monmouth-Roseville won the first three editions; the 2025 match was rained out.
2026 football, in context
Goodwin’s team went 1-8 last season and returns, by his own accounting, “90 percent of the offense and 70 percent of the defense, production-wise.” United has not made the playoffs since 2021.
Two weeks in, the offence has proved him right and the defence has not.
