Western Big 6 Conference: teams and how we cover it

The Western Big 6 Conference is one of the premier large-school athletic leagues in west-central Illinois and the Quad Cities region. For Muddy River Sport readers, it matters for one big reason: it is the home of the Galesburg Silver Streaks, the largest program in our coverage area.
The eight member schools

- Alleman (Rock Island) — Pioneers
- Geneseo — Maple Leafs
- Moline — Maroons
- Quincy — Blue Devils
- Rock Island — Rocks
- Sterling — Golden Warriors
- United Township (East Moline) — Panthers
2026 note: Alleman is not playing varsity football
Alleman announced in June that it will not field a varsity football team in 2026, citing insufficient upperclassman participation. The school plans a full JV schedule with the goal of returning to varsity in 2027.
That decision left all seven other Western Big 6 schools scrambling to fill an open date. Galesburg filled its Week 4 hole in August, adding Normal U-High for a varsity-only game at CBI Bank & Trust Stadium on September 11.
Alleman continues to compete in the conference in other sports.

Moline won the conference in 2025. Galesburg finished 1-6 in league play, seventh in the eight-team standings.
A size mismatch worth understanding
Galesburg’s IHSA classification enrollment is 1,120. Several conference opponents are considerably larger — Quincy at 1,828, United Township at 1,786 and Rock Island at 1,731. Geneseo (773), Limestone and Sterling (922) sit below.
That spread is part of why a nine-week Western Big 6 schedule is demanding for the Streaks in a year when roster depth is still being rebuilt.
What the conference looks like
The Western Big 6 stretches along the Illinois side of the Mississippi River and into the interior, pairing Quad Cities schools with river towns like Quincy and interior communities like Galesburg and Geneseo. It is a full-sports league — football, basketball, volleyball, soccer, baseball, softball, wrestling, track and cross country all crown conference champions.
