Galesburg-area boys basketball: teams and how we cover it
Boys basketball is the centerpiece of winter in west-central Illinois. From packed small-town gyms to Western Big 6 showdowns, the sport runs from November through the IHSA state series in March.
How the season works
Teams tip off in November, play through the holidays — Thanksgiving and holiday tournaments are a local tradition — and finish with conference races in February before the IHSA regional, sectional, super-sectional and state finals in March, split by enrollment class.
The local teams
The Galesburg Silver Streaks lead the way in the Western Big 6 Conference, while Lincoln Trail Conference programs — Knoxville, ROWVA, United, West Central and Abingdon-Avon — and Monmouth-Roseville in the West Central Conference round out the area. On the college side, Knox and Monmouth compete in the NCAA Division III Midwest Conference.
