A school that did not exist before 2005, built from two that between them won nine state championships — eight of them in golf.

2026 results

• Aug 21 — lost at Erie-Prophetstown 24-22 in a game delayed nearly two hours by storms. Lars Bergren had 120 rushing yards, 126 receiving and two touchdowns, one a 97-yard catch from Kane Johnson. Two failed two-point conversions decided it.
• Aug 28 — lost to Rockridge 56-8. Cullen Schwigen accounted for six touchdowns and passed 100 for his career; Thomas Sowards ran for 211 yards. Monmouth-Roseville finished with 62 total yards of offence. Zane Mason’s 80-yard kickoff return was the only score.

Sept 4 — beat Mercer County 26-14, away in Aledo. The first win of the season and the cleanest performance so far — the defensive rebuild looked a good deal more settled here.

2025: the best local season in years

The Titans went 10-2, earned the No. 5 seed in Class 3A, and reached the quarterfinals for the first time since 2018 — beating No. 12 Manteno 39-14, then Bloomington Central Catholic 29-28, before Richmond-Burton ended it 31-6.

They graduated quarterback Clay Casteel and an 1,800-yard rusher in Nick Huston. Adolphson said in July that the defence would be “a different defence.” Two weeks in, it has been.

The golf dynasty

Before consolidation, Monmouth High School — the Zippers — ran one of the great runs in Illinois high school golf.

Eight state championships: 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1995 and 1996. Six of them consecutive, from 1986 through 1991. Two more runner-up finishes in 1985 and 1993, and nineteen regional titles.

Coach Bill Pieper spent 34 years at the school and is credited with seven of the eight. The programme also produced five individual state champions: Mike Briggs in 1987, Randy Briggs in 1988 and 1990, Tadd Bednar in 1989 and Matt Livingston in 1994.

And the nickname

Monmouth were the Maroons until around 1938, when local newspaper writers took to using “zip” to describe how quickly the basketball team moved the ball. It became Zippers, and it lasted until the schools merged in 2005.

1983

The other Monmouth title came on the football field. The 1983 team went 12-1 and won the Class 3A state championship, beating Anna-Jonesboro 26-7 under Warren Dobry — whose name is now on the field the Titans play on.

That same autumn, Yorkwood — a school later absorbed into United — won the Class 1A title. Two Warren County schools, two state football championships, one season.

Since consolidation

Monmouth and Roseville merged in 2005. The high school occupies the old Monmouth building; the Roseville building became the junior high.

The consolidated school has one state-finals trophy: boys soccer, Class 1A runner-up in 2018, at 21-4-3. That remains the best result any Monmouth-Roseville team has produced, and soccer has been the most consistently strong non-football programme since.

Also on the record: girls basketball regionals in 2023 and 2025, a girls soccer regional in 2024, and a baseball regional in 2026.

Roseville itself never won a state title, though Kara Harper’s volleyball teams went 125-26 between 2001 and 2005 — a remarkable run for a school about to disappear.

The numbers problem

Principal Eric Matthews said in August that varsity volleyball is carrying eight or nine players, and that junior and senior participation is thin across football, soccer and cross country.

The counterweight, in his own account: golf numbers are up, and the seventh and eighth grade classes are large. This reads as a gap in two graduating classes rather than a decline — but it is the thing to watch at Mon-Rose this year.

Volleyball is nonetheless 3-1 under Kristin Mynatt, with wins over Ridgewood, Knoxville and Farmington.

Golf, and a trophy three miles away

The Maple City Cup is contested with United, whose school sits about three miles away. Monmouth-Roseville won the first three. United has won the last two, most recently 175-255 at Gibson Woods on August 17. The 2025 edition was rained out.

The town

Monmouth is the Warren County seat, population 8,902, and calls itself the Maple City. Wyatt Earp was born here. Ronald Reagan lived here as a child. Monmouth College, founded in 1853, is the second-largest employer and the birthplace of two national sororities, Pi Beta Phi in 1867 and Kappa Kappa Gamma in 1870.

The Prime Beef Festival, the week after Labor Day, features one of the largest parades in western Illinois.

Beyond football

Fall: football, girls soccer, volleyball, cross country, girls swimming (co-op with Galesburg), competitive cheer. Winter: basketball, wrestling, boys swimming (Galesburg co-op), bowling (co-op with West Central). Spring: baseball, softball, boys soccer, track, golf.

Jeremy Adolphson is athletic director as well as head football coach, a job he has held since 2011.

The rest of the Monmouth record

Beyond the golf and the 1983 football title, Monmouth High School left a substantial record behind it. The boys basketball team was state runner-up in 1981-82 and won eighteen regional and six sectional titles, finishing with 1,222 wins across 103 years of competition.

Girls track and field placed second in the state in 1990 and third in 1984. Baseball was state runner-up in 2001. The girls volleyball team reached the Elite Eight in 1980, the girls basketball team twice under Mike Bradford, and the scholastic bowl team in 1996.

Monmouth-Roseville has also won outside athletics: first place in Class B of the IHSA Music Sweepstakes in 2020, with speech regional titles in 2013, 2015 and 2016.
