How the IHSA Football Playoffs Work in 2026: A Plain-English Guide
The IHSA changed its football playoff format this year for the first time since 2001, and the rules confuse people every October. Here is the whole thing in plain English.
How many teams make it?
48 per class, across eight classes — 384 teams total. It was 32 per class (256 total) from 1985 through 2025.
How many wins do I need?
The traditional bar was five wins in nine games. Five got you in automatically; four almost never did.
With 128 more spots to fill statewide, four-win teams now have a live path. Nothing has been formally abolished — the field is simply bigger, so it reaches further down.
When do I find out?
Saturday, October 17, on a live telecast at 9 p.m. That is the day the brackets are announced.
What class is my school in?
Nobody knows until October 17, and anyone telling you otherwise in August is guessing.
The IHSA does not assign classes before the season. It waits until all qualifiers are known, then splits them into eight equal groups by enrollment. A school near a boundary can land in different classes in consecutive years without its enrollment changing much, purely because of who else qualified.
Galesburg’s classification enrollment is 1,120, historically near the 5A/6A line.
What does the bracket look like?
Five rounds before the final, not four.

What is the opening round?
The new bit. The top 16 seeds in each class get a bye and skip it. Seeds 17 through 48 play an extra game to reach the point where 32 teams used to start.
So a low seed now needs five wins to reach a state final instead of four. Getting in is easier; winning it is harder.
Where are the state finals?
Hancock Stadium, Illinois State University, Normal — about 80 miles from Galesburg, roughly 90 minutes via I-74. All eight championship games are played there across November 27-28.
Why did the season start early?
The extra round needed an extra week, so Week 1 moved up to August 20-22 rather than the traditional late-August start.
Does this apply to eight-man football?
No. West Central plays in the Illinois 8-Man Football Association, which runs its own playoffs entirely separately from the IHSA. Nothing above applies to the Heat.
What does it mean locally?
More than it does in the suburbs. This is a region of programs that live in the three-to-five win range — exactly the band the expansion just absorbed. Several area teams will play a November game this year that they would not have played last year.
