High school football in the Galesburg area: teams and conferences

Friday nights are the heartbeat of fall in west-central Illinois. This is your guide to how football works around Galesburg, Monmouth and Knox County — who plays where, and why it is more complicated than it looks.
How the season works
The IHSA regular season is nine weeks. In 2026 it opens August 21, a week earlier than usual, because the playoff field expanded from 32 qualifiers per class to 48 — the first expansion since 2001.
Playoff pairings are announced on a live telecast Saturday, October 17. The postseason runs five rounds, with all eight state finals at Hancock Stadium in Normal on November 27-28.
One thing worth knowing: the IHSA does not assign classes before the season. Teams are sorted into 1A through 8A only after the playoff field is set, by enrollment. Any preseason story calling a school “a 5A team” is guessing.
Three different structures
The seven programs we cover do not all play in the same league system.
The big school
Galesburg is the area’s largest program, with an IHSA classification enrollment of 1,120, and plays in the Western Big 6 alongside Geneseo, Moline, Quincy, Rock Island, Sterling and United Township. Alleman is not fielding a varsity team in 2026. Home games are at CBI Bank & Trust Stadium at VanDyke Field.
The small-school ranks
Knoxville, United, Abingdon-Avon and ROWVA/Williamsfield play in the Lincoln Trail-Prairieland football league. The Lincoln Trail and Prairieland conferences merged their football operations in 2023 into a single 17-team league, split into Large and Small divisions by enrollment. Those schools still compete as Lincoln Trail or Prairieland members in every other sport.
The two exceptions
Monmouth-Roseville plays in the Three Rivers Conference (Mississippi Division) — not Lincoln Trail or Prairieland. Their league games are against Princeton, Hall/Putnam County, Mendota, Sherrard and Kewanee.
West Central plays eight-man football in the Illinois 8-Man Football Association. Different game, different rules, its own playoff structure entirely separate from the IHSA. The Heat won the I8FA state title in 2022.

Monmouth-Roseville 10-2 (Class 3A quarterfinalists) · West Central 7-3 (I8FA playoffs) · Knoxville 5-5 (Class 1A playoffs) · Abingdon-Avon 3-6 · Galesburg 2-7 · ROWVA/Williamsfield 2-7 · United 1-8.
