High school football in the Galesburg area: teams and conferences

Friday nights are the heartbeat of fall in west-central Illinois. From the Western Big 6 to the small-school ranks, high school football shapes the calendar from late August through November across the Galesburg, Monmouth and Knox County area. Here is your guide to the local gridiron and how Muddy River Sport covers it.

How the season works

Under IHSA scheduling, teams open practice in mid-August and play a nine-week regular season beginning in late August. Reach five wins and a team qualifies for the IHSA playoffs, which run through November and are split into classes by enrollment — so the area’s largest and smallest programs each chase a state title in their own bracket.

The big school: Galesburg

The Galesburg Silver Streaks play the area’s toughest weekly schedule in the Western Big 6 Conference, facing Quincy, Moline, Rock Island, United Township, Geneseo, Sterling and Alleman. It is large-school football against Quad Cities and river-town rivals every week.

The small-school ranks

Away from Galesburg, the area’s smaller schools field competitive programs, several through the cooperative agreements that are common at the 8- and 11-man level. Communities in and around Monmouth, Knoxville, Abingdon, Alexis, Biggsville and Oneida all put teams on the field each fall, playing for conference titles and deep playoff runs in the smaller IHSA classes.
