Galesburg Silver Streaks Boys Basketball: 2026-27 Schedule and History

Galesburg Silver Streaks · Galesburg, Illinois · Western Big 6

Coach: Taylor Thiel · 2025-26: 18-13 · All-time: 1,915-1,125-1

Galesburg is the oldest and winningest basketball programme in this coverage area by a distance, and the only one that has ever won a state championship.

1913: the state title

In March 1913, Galesburg went 17-1 under E.W. Hayes and beat Peoria Manual 37-36 to win the Illinois state championship. It was the school’s second consecutive trip to the final — they had lost to Batavia the previous March at 14-5.

That is the whole of it. One hundred and thirteen years later, no other boys basketball programme in this area has won one.

Six more finals

Galesburg have reached the state championship game five further times and finished third once.

  • 1911-12 — second, 14-5, T.W. Callihan
  • 1930-31 — second, 25-4, Gerald Phillips, beaten by Berwyn-Cicero (Morton) 30-16
  • 1958-59 — third, 29-2, John Thiel
  • 1965-66 — second, 27-3, John Thiel, beaten by Thornton 74-60
  • 1967-68 — second, 27-3, John Thiel, beaten by Evanston 70-51
  • 1997-98 — second, 30-3, Mike Miller, beaten by Whitney Young 61-56

John Thiel took Galesburg to three of those finals in ten years. The current head coach is Taylor Thiel. Whether the two are related is something we have not confirmed and are not going to assume — if you know, tell us, because it is the kind of detail a town keeps track of and the record book does not.

One inconsistency worth flagging for anyone researching the programme: the IHSA’s school page files the 25-4 runner-up season as 1930-31, while its champions page labels the same team 1931-32. Same record, same coach, two different years in two IHSA documents.

The rest of the trophy case

Across 123 recorded seasons since 1903-04, Galesburg have won 42 regional championships, 19 sectionals, 9 super-sectionals and 18 district titles from the pre-1936 era, and have qualified for the state finals 24 times.

The regionals cluster heavily in the middle of the century — eleven in the twelve years from 1935-36, then seventeen in the eighteen seasons from 1952-53. The most recent was 2012-13.

Where the programme is now

Last season was a clear step forward. Galesburg went 18-13 under Taylor Thiel, following 11-21 and 11-22 in the two seasons before under Chad Thompson. Thirty-one games is a long season at this level and a seven-win improvement inside one year is real movement.

The programme is also one of the few in this area whose IHSA filing is completely current — every season through 2025-26 is on record with a win-loss figure attached. That sounds like housekeeping, but six of the fourteen area programmes have gaps running to a decade, so it matters when you are comparing numbers.

The Western Big 6

Galesburg are the only school in this coverage area playing in the Western Big 6, against Alleman, Moline, Quincy, Rock Island, Sterling and United Township. Everyone else we cover plays in the Lincoln Trail Conference or, in Monmouth-Roseville’s case, the Three Rivers.

That matters more than it sounds. Galesburg’s regional draw is in the large-school classes, so a Galesburg regional title is won against schools several times the size of anything in the Lincoln Trail. It also means very few of their games are against teams we otherwise cover — the schedule runs toward the Quad Cities rather than toward Knox County.

2026-27 schedule

The 2026-27 schedule is being loaded and is currently incomplete — around seven games are posted. IHSA boys practice is scheduled to open Monday, November 9, and the earliest game found anywhere in the area is November 23.

We will publish the full schedule on this page as soon as it is posted, and update results through the season.

What we are still chasing

  • The full 2026-27 schedule
  • The 2026-27 roster, which has not been posted publicly
  • Whether Taylor Thiel is related to John Thiel
  • March 2027 state series dates, which the IHSA has not published

District titles (18), from the pre-1936 format: 1912-13, 1913-14, 1917-18, 1919-20, 1920-21, 1921-22, 1922-23, 1923-24, 1924-25, 1925-26, 1926-27, 1927-28, 1928-29, 1930-31, 1931-32, 1932-33, 1933-34, 1934-35.

Two things stand out. The first is the eighteen consecutive-ish district titles between 1912 and 1935 — Galesburg simply owned the pre-regional era. The second is the gap since: two regional titles in the last twenty-five years, in 2000-01 and 2012-13, from a programme that won twenty-nine in the forty years before that.

Where Galesburg Silver Streaks rank in the area

Across the fourteen boys basketball programmes we cover, Galesburg Silver Streaks sit first by all-time wins (1,915), first by winning percentage (.630) and first by regional championships (42).

No area boys basketball programme has won more. The next is Wethersfield Flying Geese, on 1,455.

Galesburg Silver Streaks have converted nineteen of those 42 regional titles into a sectional championship, losing at that stage 23 times.

The seven state trophies in the cabinet are among only eight won by area boys basketball programmes in total.

Full comparisons for every programme, plus conference structure, season dates and how the Illinois postseason works, are on our area boys basketball guide.
