2026 so far

Two straight-sets wins to open, including one at Knoxville, against a team that would beat Farmington the next night.
Sept 1 — lost at Mercer County 0-2.
Sept 3 — lost to Orion 0-2 (25-11, 25-17).
The numbers problem
Principal Eric Matthews said in August that varsity volleyball is carrying eight or nine players, and that junior and senior participation is thin across several Monmouth-Roseville sports.
A volleyball team needs six on the floor. Eight or nine means no meaningful rotation and no margin for injury or illness across a season that runs to November.
The encouraging part, in Matthews’ own account: the seventh and eighth grade classes are large, and golf numbers are up. This reads as a gap in two graduating classes rather than a decline — but it is the thing to watch.
The roster
Two seniors: Alayna Riley (middle/defensive specialist) and Charli Russell (outside).
The junior class does the rest of the work — Carmyn Way (middle), Elle Braun (outside), Reese Anderson (setter).
Mynatt on the summer, speaking to WMOI: “We tried a lot of different rotations,” adding that she was “very thrilled with what I saw and the good things that are coming.” With nine players, rotation experiments are less a tactical preference than a necessity.

Monmouth-Roseville plays in the Three Rivers Athletic Conference — not the Lincoln Trail. Only Galesburg, in the Western Big 6, plays a different schedule among area schools.
September 14 against United is the local one. The two schools are about three miles apart and contest the Maple City Cup in golf; they meet here too.
2025
The Titans went 11-26 overall and 0-11 in the Three Rivers, twelfth of twelve. Worth noting what that means: every one of their eleven wins came outside the conference. The Three Rivers is a considerably larger-school league than the Lincoln Trail, and Monmouth-Roseville is the smallest school in it.
The season did not end badly, though. Hosting the Class 2A regional, they beat Peoria Manual 25-7, 25-7 on October 27, then lost to Eureka 25-10, 25-12.
Laura Swiler coached the programme from 2018 to 2024, going 126-61.
The school
Monmouth-Roseville was formed by the 2005 consolidation of Monmouth High School and Roseville High School. It enrolls 483.
Roseville itself never won a state title, but Kara Harper’s volleyball teams went 125-26 between 2001 and 2005 — including a super-sectional qualifier in 2005, the last full year before the school disappeared. It is the strongest thing in the old Roseville athletic record.
The consolidated school’s one state-finals trophy came in boys soccer, runner-up in 2018.

State semifinals Friday, November 13, finals Saturday, November 14, at CEFCU Arena in Normal, with Class 2A around midday on the Friday.

One regional title
Since the 2005 consolidation, Monmouth-Roseville volleyball has won a single IHSA regional championship: 2009-10, in Class 2A.
No sectional titles, no state-finals appearances.
That is the thinnest volleyball record of any of the larger schools here, and it sits oddly next to the school’s boys soccer state runner-up finish in 2018 and the eight state golf championships Monmouth High School won before consolidation.
The coaching turnover
Part of the explanation is in the coaching list. Since 2009 the programme has had six head coaches:
Robin Bell (2009-14), Lisa Miller (2014-15), Lynn Halcomb (2015-18), Laura Swiler (2018-24), Lissa Schreck (2024-25), and now Kristen Mynatt.
Swiler’s six seasons at 126-61 are the most stable stretch in that run. Nobody else has lasted more than five.
For comparison, Galesburg has had five volleyball coaches since 1981 and Wethersfield three since 1976.
A note on the records
The IHSA has no 2025-26 row for Monmouth-Roseville at all — its data ends at 2024-25, with a 9-26 season under Lissa Schreck. MaxPreps lists 11-26 for 2025.
We have used MaxPreps and flag the gap.
The hardware is in the predecessor schools
Monmouth-Roseville’s own IHSA record — 268-238-2, a .530 mark across 16 seasons since 2009-10 — contains exactly one championship: a Class 2A regional title in 2009-10, the program’s first year. Nothing since. No sectional, no super-sectional, no state finals.
Two caveats. First, the filing is stale: the last row is 2024-25 (9-26, Lissa Schreck), with no 2025-26 season submitted. Second, and more importantly, that record covers only the consolidated school. The volleyball history of Monmouth and Roseville is substantially larger, and it sits in two separate IHSA entries most people never look at.
Roseville’s run was one of the best in the region
Roseville holds eleven regional championships — 1992-93, 1993-94, 1994-95, 1995-96, 1998-99, 1999-00, 2000-01, 2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04 and 2004-05 — including seven consecutive from 1998 through 2005. On top of that: three sectional titles (1992-93, 2000-01, 2004-05) and a super-sectional win in 2004-05 that carried a 35-5 team to the state finals. The IHSA leaves that team’s finishing place blank, so where they ended up is something we have not been able to confirm.
Roseville’s recorded win-loss covers only four seasons — Kara Harper’s 2001-02 through 2004-05, at 125-26. A data oddity we will report rather than launder: the IHSA prints 2001-02, 2002-03 and 2003-04 as exactly 30-7 each. Three identical consecutive seasons is improbable, and it looks like a data-entry artifact in the source. The coach total is arithmetically consistent with it, so that is genuinely what the IHSA publishes — attribute it to them, not to us.
Monmouth High School adds a 1979-80 team that went 22-3 under Debi Brokaw and won a district, a sectional and a super-sectional to reach the Class A state finals — again with a blank place column — plus a sectional title in 1984-85 and regionals in 1991-92 and 1993-94.
Put together, the two predecessor programs won four sectional championships and reached state twice. The consolidated Titans have won one regional in sixteen years. That gap is the real story of Monmouth-Roseville volleyball, and it is not visible from the current record alone.
