2026 so far
- Aug 24 — won at Putnam County, 2-1
- Aug 25 — lost to Mercer County, 0-2
- Aug 27 — beat Alleman, 2-0
- Aug 29 — beat Monmouth-Roseville, 2-0
Aug 31 — lost to Newman Central Catholic 2-1. Wethersfield took the opening set 25-14 before Newman won the next two, 25-22 and 25-18. A local report printed the junior varsity scores as varsity and dated the match September 1; it was the Monday.
Sept 2 — beat Henry-Senachwine 2-0 (25-22, 25-14).
The freshmen
The most interesting thing about this team is who is running it.
Olivia Shipley, a freshman setter, already leads Wethersfield in assists and aces. Kyleigh Anderson, a sophomore outside hitter, leads in both kills and digs.
Around them: junior middle Jordan Nelson, and the two seniors, outside hitter Tinsley Newman and right side Ashley Oliver.
For a programme that won thirty matches last season, rebuilding around a freshman setter is a bold way to start. Four matches in, it is working.
Two years at the top
2024: Lincoln Trail champions, 10-1 in conference and 31-6 overall. The title was decided in the final week, at home against Knoxville, with both teams tied at the top — Wethersfield won in three sets.
2025: 30-7, second at 10-1. They beat ROWVA/Williamsfield 2-1 on October 1, the Cougars’ only conference defeat all season, and won twelve of thirteen between September 8 and October 8.
The season ended in the regional final, losing to ROWVA/Williamsfield in three after taking the first set.
Wethersfield were also undefeated conference champions in 2018.

The Flying Geese
One of the best nicknames in Illinois high school sport, and a school in an unusual position.
Wethersfield occupies the southern half of Kewanee, a city of 12,509, and shares it with Kewanee High School — two separate districts inside one town. Wethersfield enrolls 138 students.
It also co-ops with Annawan for football, as the Annawan-Wethersfield Titans, currently 2-0. But not for volleyball.
The two schools play each other on October 5. The same students who share a football team line up on opposite sides of a net in the autumn.
The trophy case
Wethersfield’s biggest banner is in another sport: the 2001 Class 1A football state championship, 12-1 under Tom Buck, beating Monmouth 27-12.
In volleyball, the programme has never reached an IHSA state final — nor has any school in this coverage area. Conference titles in 2018 and 2024, and regional finals in each of the last two seasons, are the high-water marks.
The postseason
State semifinals are Friday, November 13, finals Saturday, November 14, at CEFCU Arena in Normal. Regional and sectional assignments for 2026 have not been published.

The best volleyball programme in the area, by the record book
This is not a matter of opinion. The IHSA has Wethersfield at 638-282-8 across 32 seasons — a .692 winning percentage, comfortably the strongest volleyball record of any school in this coverage area.
And eighteen regional championships:
1986, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2023, 2024 and 2025 — plus a district title in 1982.
Seven of those came in a row, from 2013 through 2019.
2016: third in the state
The high-water mark, and the only state-finals appearance by any volleyball programme in this coverage area.
In 2015-16 Wethersfield won a regional, won a sectional, won a super-sectional, qualified for the state finals and finished third in Class 1A.
They took a second sectional title the following season.
No other school on this site has ever reached a super-sectional in volleyball, with one exception — Bureau Valley did it in 2006.
Tonya Vincent
Now in her twentieth season, and the run of results under her is remarkable for a school of 138 students:
| Season | Record |
|---|---|
| 2016-17 | 36-2 |
| 2017-18 | 35-1 |
| 2018-19 | 36-2 |
| Also | 33-5 and 33-8 seasons |
Three consecutive seasons losing a combined five matches.
Before her: Jackie Schmidgall from 1976, then Sharon Shock from 1978 to 1988.
2025 in detail
Wethersfield opened 13-0 and finished 30-7. The seven defeats came against Elmwood, Illini Bluffs, Riverdale, Macomb, East Moline United, Monmouth United and ROWVA/Williamsfield — nobody beat them twice except the Cougars, who lost to Wethersfield on October 1 and won the regional final on October 30.
One note: the IHSA records that season as 30-8, MaxPreps as 30-7. We have used 30-7 and flag the discrepancy.
What the .692 does not include
Wethersfield’s 638-282-8 is the best all-time mark in this coverage area, and the filing is current through 2025-26 — but it is worth knowing that it undercounts the program.
Six championship seasons carry no win-loss totals at all: 1995-96, 1996-97, 1997-98, 1998-99, 2004-05 and 2005-06. The IHSA record shows the regional titles but leaves the records and the coaches blank. So the .692 covers 32 recorded years of a program that has competed in more, and four of the six missing years were regional-winning seasons — which means the true percentage is very likely higher, not lower.
Within that record, Tonya Vincent’s own coaching total is 506-195-8 across 20 seasons, a .719 clip. More than three-quarters of the program’s all-time wins belong to her tenure. There is no other coaching record like it in the area.
One clarification for anyone researching the program: 2016-17 is coded as a sectional championship season at 36-2, but that team did not reach the state finals. The state trip was 2015-16. The two seasons sit next to each other in the record and are easy to conflate.
Send us results
Volleyball gets a fraction of the coverage football does around here, and almost none of these matches are written up anywhere. If you have a result, a stat line or a photo, send it in — we post them as they come and correct errors the same day.
