Wethersfield Flying Geese Girls Basketball: 2026-27 Schedule and History
Wethersfield Flying Geese · Kewanee, Illinois · Lincoln Trail Conference
Coach: Todd Hansen · 2025-26: 24-10 · All-time: 824-493 (.626)
Wethersfield girls basketball has 824 wins, sixteen regional titles, four sectional championships and a coach in the middle of the best sustained run in the programme’s history. In fifty-one seasons it has never once reached a state finals.
The absence
We are going to lead with this because it is the most striking thing in the record.
Sixteen regionals. Four sectionals. And no super-sectional win, ever — no state finals appearance in half a century of play. The Flying Geese have reached the round before Normal four times and lost it four times.
The most recent of those came last season, and it was the closest thing to a breakthrough in twenty years.
Todd Hansen’s run
The last three seasons: 26-5, then 27-6, then 24-10 with a regional and a sectional title.
The 2025-26 sectional was Wethersfield’s first in twenty years — the previous one came in 2005-06 — and only the fourth in programme history. Getting there took a 24-10 team through a bracket, and then the super-sectional went the way it always has.
The full record
Regional titles (16): 1980-81, 1981-82, 1982-83, 1983-84, 1995-96, 1996-97, 1997-98, 1998-99, 2004-05, 2005-06, 2007-08, 2011-12, 2017-18, 2018-19, 2024-25, 2025-26.
Sectional titles (4): 1982-83, 1996-97, 2005-06, 2025-26.
State finals appearances: none.
Four regionals in a row in the early 1980s, four more in a row in the late 1990s, and back-to-back titles in the last two seasons. The programme’s filing is complete and current through 2025-26 — one of only six area girls programmes we can say that about.
How it compares to Wethersfield volleyball
This is the comparison that matters at this school, and it cuts the other way.
Volleyball: 638-282-8, a .692 record, eighteen regional titles, two sectionals — and third place in the Class 1A state finals in 2015-16, a 33-8 season under Tonya Vincent. It is the only state-finals placing by any programme in this coverage area outside Galesburg and Annawan.
Basketball: 824-493, .626, sixteen regionals, four sectionals, no state finals.
Both are strong programmes at the same small school. Volleyball has the trophy; basketball has more wins and a longer regional list. If Wethersfield girls basketball ever wins a super-sectional, the school will have been to Normal in two sports — which very few schools this size manage in either.
2026-27 schedule
Wethersfield have one of the fuller listings in the conference — around 23 games posted, plus three dated TBA including the Watkins Classic and the Galena Shootout. IHSA girls practice is scheduled to open Monday, November 2.
We will publish the full schedule on this page as soon as it is posted, and update results through the season.
Finding Wethersfield online
The school is in Kewanee, not in a place called Wethersfield — the IHSA files it as “Kewanee (Wethersfield)”, and there is a much larger Wethersfield in Connecticut that dominates search results. “Flying Geese” is the term that reliably finds the right school.
Coverage of Lincoln Trail basketball is thin in general. MaxPreps carries schedules and scores when schools update them, which is inconsistent at this level. The IHSA’s record pages are authoritative but frequently years behind. No local outlet runs a nightly area scoreboard in winter.
We will post results on this page through the season. If you have a score before we do, send it and it goes up with credit.
What we are still chasing
- The 2026-27 roster, and the three TBA tournament dates
- March 2027 state series dates and assignments
- Whether any of the four super-sectional defeats are remembered locally — we would like to write that piece properly
The school
Wethersfield Community Unit School District 230 serves the eastern side of Kewanee, a town of roughly 12,000 in Henry County, about thirty-five miles north-east of Galesburg. It is the smaller of Kewanee’s two high schools — Kewanee High School is a separate, larger school filed separately by the IHSA — and it competes in Class 1A in most sports.
The Flying Geese nickname is among the more distinctive in Illinois high school sport and is worth using in any search, because “Wethersfield” alone will take you to Connecticut.
Where Wethersfield Flying Geese rank in the area
Across the fourteen girls basketball programmes we cover, Wethersfield Flying Geese sit second by all-time wins (824), fifth by winning percentage (.626) and third by regional championships (sixteen).
The nearest programmes by wins are Galesburg Silver Streaks above (1,103) and Annawan Bravettes below (808).
Wethersfield Flying Geese have converted four of those sixteen regional titles into a sectional championship, losing at that stage twelve times.
No state finals trophy. Five area programmes have one; this is not among them.
Full comparisons for every programme, plus conference structure, season dates and how the Illinois postseason works, are on our area girls basketball guide.
By the numbers

The most recent regional title is the freshest in the area — a live piece of form rather than history.
Four super-sectionals, four defeats
Wethersfield have won four sectional titles and lost the super-sectional every time. Each of those defeats put the programme one game from Normal. Fifty-one seasons, sixteen regionals, and the same last hurdle standing — it is the defining fact of this record and the one a 2026-27 team could change.
