Wethersfield have been playing boys basketball since 1918-19 and have won more games than all but two programmes in this coverage area. They have won one sectional title in all of it.
1978-79: the one
Wally Keller’s team went 29-1 and won the only sectional championship in Wethersfield boys basketball history. The run ended there — no super-sectional, no state finals appearance, then or ever.
A hundred and six seasons, 1,455 wins, and a single season that got past the regional round. It is the sort of record that makes you look twice, and it is what the IHSA’s file says.

The regionals bunch into three eras — four in the six years around 1978, two at the turn of the century, and four in the seven seasons from 2012-13. Nothing since 2018-19.
The record stops in 2024
Wethersfield’s IHSA filing ends at 2023-24. Two seasons are missing, so the 1,455-1,130 above is a 2024 snapshot rather than a current figure.
The last three seasons on file: 5-24 in 2021-22 under Jeff Parsons, then 14-15, then 12-19 under Tom McGunnigal.
We cannot confirm who is coaching
MaxPreps lists two people as head coach for 2026-27 — Tom McGunnigal and Kyle Galli. The most likely explanation is that one leads the varsity and the other a lower level, with both tagged the same way, but we have not confirmed which is which and are not going to assert it.
Wethersfield is one of three area programmes with this problem this winter; Stark County and Princeville have the same doubled listing.
Not the same team as Annawan
Wethersfield and Annawan share a football team — the Annawan-Wethersfield Titans — because neither school can reliably field eleven-man sides alone. In basketball they are entirely separate, as they are in volleyball, and they meet each other on the schedule.
So there is no Annawan-Wethersfield basketball record, no shared roster and no shared coach. If you are looking for a Wethersfield basketball result under the co-op name, that is why you cannot find it.

The 2026-27 schedule is partially posted. IHSA boys practice is scheduled to open Monday, November 9.

Finding Wethersfield online
Wethersfield High School is in Kewanee, not in a town called Wethersfield, which trips up almost everyone searching for the first time — the IHSA files the school as “Kewanee (Wethersfield)”. There is also a considerably larger Wethersfield in Connecticut. Adding “Flying Geese” or “Illinois” is what separates them. Kewanee also has a second high school, Kewanee High, filed separately.
Coverage of Lincoln Trail basketball is thin in general. MaxPreps carries schedules and scores when schools update them, which is inconsistent at this level. The IHSA’s record pages are authoritative but frequently years behind. No local outlet runs a nightly area scoreboard in winter.

The school
Wethersfield Community Unit School District 230 serves the eastern side of Kewanee, a town of roughly 12,000 in Henry County, about thirty-five miles north-east of Galesburg. It is the smaller of Kewanee’s two high schools — Kewanee High School is a separate, larger school filed separately by the IHSA — and it competes in Class 1A in most sports.
The Flying Geese nickname is among the more distinctive in Illinois high school sport and is worth using in any search, because “Wethersfield” alone will take you to Connecticut.

Wethersfield Flying Geese have converted one of those thirteen regional titles into a sectional championship, losing at that stage twelve times.

7 years since the last regional puts Wethersfield in the middle of the area — recent enough to be remembered, long enough to matter.
What a first sectional in fifty years would mean
Wethersfield boys have not won a sectional since 1978-79 and have never reached a state finals. The girls programme at the same school broke a twenty-year sectional drought last winter. If the boys followed, Wethersfield would become one of very few Illinois schools this size to hold sectional titles in both basketball programmes and volleyball inside a decade.
