Abingdon-Avon are the strongest girls basketball programme in this coverage area right now, and it is not especially close. Three straight seasons of 26 wins or better, a regional in each of the last three years, and a sectional title in 2024-25.
Brent Dugan’s run
Since taking over in 2018-19, Dugan has gone 167-67 — a .714 winning percentage across eight seasons.
The last three tell it best: 26-8, then 30-5, then 26-6. The 30-5 season in 2024-25 brought a Class 1A regional and sectional double, the only sectional title in the consolidated programme’s history.
They then won the regional again in 2025-26. Four regional championships in total — 2014-15, 2023-24, 2024-25 and 2025-26 — three of them in the last three years.
What is still missing
A state finals appearance. Thirteen seasons, four regionals, one sectional, and the super-sectional round has never fallen.
The 2024-25 team came closest: 30-5, a sectional title in hand, and one game from Normal. For a programme that did not exist before 2013-14, that is a fast rise — but the last step is the hard one, and it is the one that separates Abingdon-Avon from Annawan, twenty-five miles up the road with two state championships.
What the predecessor record does and does not show
The pre-consolidation Abingdon girls entry is close to useless as a record and worth explaining rather than quoting.
Its printed total is 12-14 across one year — because only the 2002-03 season carries an actual win-loss figure. Yet the same table lists regional championships in 1984-85, 1990-91, 1991-92, 1996-97, 2004-05 and 2011-12, every one of them with no record and no coach attached.
So the old Abingdon programme won at least six regionals, and the IHSA has essentially no idea how those teams performed. If anyone in Abingdon has scorebooks from those seasons, we would publish them.
How it compares to A-Town volleyball
The contrast between the school’s two girls sports is stark.
Volleyball: 98-262 across 13 seasons, a .273 record, with one regional title — won in the programme’s first year, 2013-14, and nothing since. Last season: 5-31.
Basketball: 247-138, .642, four regionals and a sectional, with three consecutive 26-win seasons.
Same school, same thirteen years, same girls in many cases. One programme is the best in the area and the other is among the weakest. That is not a criticism of anyone — it is the reality of small-school sport, where a single strong year group and the right coach can decide which sport a town is good at.

Finding Abingdon-Avon online
Searching for this team is harder than it should be. Abingdon is also a town in Virginia and a market town in Oxfordshire, England, both considerably better known online than Abingdon, Illinois. The school appears variously as Abingdon-Avon, Abingdon/Avon, A-Town and, in the IHSA’s own records, as “Abingdon (A.-Avon)” — four spellings of one school. Adding “Tornadoes” or “Illinois” to a search is usually what makes the difference.
The consolidation also means older results sit under Abingdon or Avon separately, so a search for the current name will not reach anything before 2013-14. Coverage of Lincoln Trail basketball is thin in general. MaxPreps carries schedules and scores when schools update them, which is inconsistent at this level. The IHSA’s record pages are authoritative but frequently years behind. No local outlet runs a nightly area scoreboard in winter.
